React Native Consulting: What a Consultant Does and When to Hire One (2026)
Not every React Native problem needs a new team. Sometimes you need a senior person for a few weeks to unblock a release, review an architecture or decide whether to rebuild. That is consulting, and it is a different purchase from development.

Consulting is not the same as development
A development engagement delivers a product. A consulting engagement delivers a decision, a plan or an unblocked team. The output is often a document, a review or a short burst of hands-on work alongside your own engineers.
That difference matters when you buy. You are paying for judgement, so seniority counts far more than headcount.
What React Native consulting usually covers
- Architecture review. Is the app structured to scale, or is it accumulating debt? Navigation, state, data layer, native modules.
- Performance audits. Slow start-up, janky lists, memory growth and oversized bundles are common and usually fixable.
- New Architecture migration. Planning the move, checking library compatibility and sequencing the work. Our New Architecture guide explains what is involved.
- Release and CI/CD setup. Automated builds, signing, store submission and over-the-air updates. See CI/CD for React Native.
- Build or rebuild decisions. An honest view on whether to fix the current codebase or start again.
- Technology choices. React Native against Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform or native for your case. We compare them in React Native vs Flutter and Kotlin Multiplatform vs React Native.
- Team support. Code review, pairing and hiring help for an in-house team that is new to mobile.
When a consultant is the right call
Hire a consultant when:
- You already have a team and need senior input, not more hands.
- Something specific is stuck: a release, a performance problem, a migration.
- You face a one-off decision with long consequences, such as a rebuild or a platform choice.
- You are about to hire or outsource and want an independent view of scope first.
Hire a development team instead when you need a product built end to end and have no engineers to carry it. Our guide to hiring React Native developers covers that route.
What a good engagement looks like
- A written question. "Why is our Android start-up slow?" is a brief. "Help with our app" is not.
- Access to the code. A consultant who has not read the repository is guessing.
- A fixed window. Days or weeks with a defined end, not an open retainer by default.
- A concrete deliverable. A prioritised list of findings with effort estimates, not a slide deck of principles.
- A handover. Your team should be able to continue without the consultant.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Have you shipped React Native apps to both stores, and can I see them?
- Who exactly will do the work, and how senior are they?
- What will I have in my hands at the end?
- How do you handle findings that suggest we should not continue with you?
- Can you work inside our tools and review process?
How pricing works
Consulting is normally priced by time, because the scope is a question and not a feature list. A build is better priced as a fixed scope. If a review leads to build work, the estimate should follow the same logic as any other project: weeks of engineering multiplied by a rate. Our app cost estimator guide explains that method, and the cost calculator applies it.
Frequently asked questions
What does a React Native consultant do?
They review architecture and performance, plan migrations, set up release pipelines, advise on technology choices and support in-house teams. The output is a decision, a plan or an unblocked team more than a finished product.
When should I hire a React Native consultant instead of an agency?
When you already have engineers and need senior judgement on a specific problem or decision. If you need a product built from scratch with no team of your own, a development team is the better fit.
How long does a consulting engagement last?
Typically days to a few weeks, with a defined question and a defined end. Longer support can follow, but it should be a choice and not the default.
Can a consultant work with my existing developers?
Yes. Code review, pairing and working inside your existing tools and process are a normal part of consulting, and the aim is to leave your team able to continue alone.
Do I need a consultant before rebuilding my app?
An independent review before a rebuild is usually worth it. Rebuilds are expensive, and many problems that prompt them can be fixed in the existing codebase.
